They are installed before waterproofing so there isn’t a cold joint between substrate and pipe when the membrane is applied. They’re also installed to stop the pipe from moving in a vertical direction which can tear the membrane. They seal the gap between the pipe and the substrate. If they are being installed for a floor or shower wastes they need to be recessed into the substrate so that they are set flush with the surface of the substrate. They need to be securely fixed with a polyurethane sealant to both surfaces that need to be pre-primed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. At the time of fixing, the internal rim of the flange and the outside of the pipe riser will also need to be primed with pvc primer followed by glueing the two together with pvc glue.
