Do you have any idea how to find the right wall and floor stone/tile fixer ?
Here are a few things this Old Stonemason has gleaned over 55 years in the Stone/Tile industry. it’s best to hire an expert player. An expert bathroom tiler or kitchen tiler can give that (heaven forbid) magazine look you’re aiming for. However, not all stoney's/tilers are real experts as they claim to be. Check out the following and remember this: The cost to redo a stone or tile job is approximately 4 times the original price.
  • Select your Stone or Tiles first before choosing the mason/tiler. Counterintuitive? Choosing these before hand, informs the scope and challenges of your installation. The tiler then can advise you on the approach they’re going to take based from that. Listen to their suggestions because that’s when you’ll know if your speaking to a real expert fixer. Check out the appearance of their tools, vehicle and clothing.
  • Ask for work references and previous sample photographs. Make time for inspections and check on the finished work (Stone alignment, grout alignments, tile placing and spacing etc.).
  • Got your fixer? Make sure that your man/woman is a right fit for you in terms of work scope, your requirements, their experience, your budget, the duration of work and their availability.( They will be in your home alone)
  • Request for a quote in writing. It is important to get a detailed quote of the services that will be charged for. The quote should indicate the cost starting from removal of your old floor or wall covering, applying suitable underlayment, priming, grouting and then up to the polishing and finishing.
  • To feel more confident, ask the mason about mechanical fixing, tiler on the adhesives and the grout system they’re using. Do a quick search on your stone/tile manufacturer and verify if the right materials are used. DO NOT use materials that will grow due to moisture sensitivity . Serpentine ( Green Marble)
  • Don't waste your time asking for trade or Government papers as this pertains to to my apprenticeship/era ( 4 pound 10 shillings and sixpence per week.) !!!
